Since 2018 I have built and led the technology behind two founder-led ventures in Cambodia — an HR platform that businesses run their attendance, payroll and reporting on, and a last-mile logistics service that has been in continuous production for over five years.
Today that platform serves more than 4 million API requests a day, and the load is not spread evenly — at shift change it absorbs over 30,000 requests in a single minute. Sustaining that is less about capacity than about discipline: profiling against real production traffic, ranking work by total cost rather than worst case, and fixing causes rather than symptoms.
The constraints here are what make the engineering interesting. Connectivity is uneven, devices are mid-range, and infrastructure is real money rather than a rounding error — so efficiency is a product requirement, not an optimisation. Systems have to stay correct while they get faster, because payroll is the one part of an HR product where being wrong is unforgivable.
Beyond the code, my work is organisational. I lead a 26-person technology department, own the platform architecture across API, web, mobile and infrastructure, and carry the cloud budget that pays for it. I read the query profiler and I read the invoice — in my experience they are the same skill at different altitudes, and most of what looks like a pricing problem turns out to be an engineering decision someone made under time pressure two years ago.
